Mount Mercy Students Want Old Athletic Shoes

By Forrest Saunders, Reporter

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Two college students from Mount Mercy University want your old gym shoes.

The students will be donating them to Nike's "Reuse-a-Shoe" program. The footwear will be ground up and turned into sports surfaces like playgrounds, courts, turf fields and more.

McKenna Sexton, a sophomore, got the idea from a class project. She expanded it with her friend Amanda Mayotte, and together the two are collecting shoes across town in drop-off bins.

Sexton said protecting the environment is her motivation.

"I really just want the community to get involved and think about ways that they can be eco-friendly and help out the environment," said Sexton.

The girls are looking for 500 pairs of shoes. They have about 100 so far.

There are three drop off sites for shoes; one at Rockwell Collins Recreation Center, 400 Collins Road NE; one at Stuff Etc., 252 Blairs Ferry Road NE; and one at Mount Mercy University CRST International Graduate Center, 1599 Wenig Road NE.

Bins will be available until April 21st.
