CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A vacant home on the city’s southeast side was destroyed by fire early Friday morning.

Firefighters responded to the home in the 1700 block of Washington Avenue SE at about 3:30 a.m. Firefighters were unable to get inside the structure because the roof had collapsed. Homes on both sides of the house were also damaged by the heat and flames.

Lacy Malone, who lives next store to the home, said that wood siding on her house caught fire. “I pulled up from work and saw the house next door on fire, and I called 9-1-1 and immediately ran inside where my mom was watching my children and woke everybody up and brought everybody outside after I called 9-1-1,” Malone said.

No one was injured in the fire. The vacant home was considered a total loss. An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way.
