PLEASANT HILL, Iowa (AP) Authorities in central Iowa say a driver who led police on a car chase that ended with a crash has died.

The Polk County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Melissa Sue Toillion, of Des Moines, died at the scene Sunday.

The chase began at 1:30 a.m. when Toillion failed to stop her vehicle for law enforcement. The vehicle later landed on its side on the front yard of a house.

Authorities identified the vehicle's passenger as 22-year-old Justin Formaro, of Des Moines. He was seriously injured in the crash.

Formaro and the Toillion are suspected of stealing from a convenience store before the crash.

Police say there was additional damage to neighboring yards and at least one utility pole.
