Montezuma Authorities Investigate Apartment Fire
MONTEZUMA, Iowa - A Thanksgiving Day fire destroyed an apartment complex and left several people homeless in Montezuma.
At about noon Thursday, a firefighter deep-frying a turkey in his driveway saw smoke and ran inside the building to make sure everyone was out safely.
Firefighters from two neighboring cities responded to the fire.
The 100-year-old apartment building had four units and was completely lost. Firefighters on the scene said they quickly realized nothing could be saved.
“We tried to make an attack through the front door, but it was already too fully engulfed and we had to back out and fight a very defensive fire,” said Dave Arendt with the Montezuma Fire Department. “With it starting in the basement, it shot right up inside of the walls and got up to the second floor very quickly.”
Three of the four apartments were occupied by six people. No one was injured.
