CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The woman found dead in her Cedar Rapids apartment last week was stabbed multiple times, according to the state medical examiner.
Iowa State Medical Examiner Dr. Julia Goodin performed the autopsy on 37-year-old Shanna L Beyhl on Saturday. On Monday, police announced that Beyhl's death was being investigated as a homicide.
"The cause of death is multiple stab wounds of the neck and abdomen," Goodin said.
Goodin said did not have information on when Beyhl was pronounced dead. She said she could not speculate on how long Beyhl had been deceased when police found her body Friday afternoon at the Shamrock Apartments, 228 Jacolyn Drive SW. Police were called to Beyhl's apartment, Unit 13, to conduct a welfare check. Responding officers found Beyhl dead inside the residence.
Where Beyhl was found inside the apartment and if there was any sign of forced entry are part of the investigation and will not be released, Greg Buelow, the city's public safety communication coordinator said Tuesday. Additionally, if police have any indication on how long Beyhl was deceased, they are not releasing that information.
"The time of death would be part of the medical examiner's report, which may take some time to receive," Buelow said.
Police have said they are following up on several leads and do not believe there is an immediate threat to the public.
Beyhl's death marks the seventh homicide in Cedar Rapids this year.
On January 30, police said Robert Drew Livingston, 47, shot and killed his estranged wife, Ingrid Huber Livingston, 41, and her mother, Linda Jane Huber, 73, before killing himself.
Five days later, Clifton Sparks, 31, of Cedar Rapids was found lying on the street in the 1800 block of B Avenue at 12:30 a.m. Feb. 4. Police have not said how Sparks was killed. No one has been charged in connection with Sparks' death.
On Friday, February 21, police said Dennis Koopman, 54, killed his estranged wife, 52-year-old LuElla Koopman, outside of her apartment in southwest Cedar Rapids.
