MECHANICSVILLE, Iowa - A possible explosion and fire destroyed a single-family home in the Cedar County community of Mechanicsville Thursday morning. No one was home at the time.

Mechanicsville volunteer fire chief, Lonni Koch said flames were shooting out the front door when firefighters arrived. While the report came in as an explosion and then a fire, the chief said it's impossible to tell now which happened first.

There were medical devices inside including oxygen tanks that could have exploded from the fire. The Iowa Fire Marshal's Office will investigate the cause.

The house is owned by Cassie Forde, 29, who lived there with her three children. Forde was not home at the time. The children were either in school or preschool.
