Marion Restaurant Closing Dec. 22 Unless Buyer Emerges
By George C. Ford, Reporter
MARION, Iowa - Huntington's will be closing Dec. 22 unless a buyer steps forward for the long time downtown Marion restaurant.
John Huntington, who bought the business in 2001, has accepted a job that will provide more time with his children.
"I lost my wife a few years ago to breast cancer," Huntington said. "My daughter is asking me 'Do you have to go into work tonight' and I say 'Yeah' and she kind of gives me that face.
"I was offered a job where it's basically working days and no weekends, so I jumped at it."
Huntington said he is actively seeking a buyer for the restaurant at 1107 Seventh Ave., which dates back to the mid-1980s when it was known as David's.
"We're thinking it opened in 1984 when the mall was built in downtown Marion," he said. "I will be selling the restaurant and I would entertain keeping the name 'Huntington's.'"
Huntington said customers have expressed regret that the restaurant may be closing. While he will miss seeing familiar faces, Huntington will be spending considerably more time at home.
During the first six months that he owned the business, Huntington worked about 100 hours a week. Even now, 12 years later, he still works at least six days a week.
