Marion Celebrating 175th Anniversary
MARION, Iowa - What do you get someone when they turn 175? Especially if they're in a place that is thriving?
There may be no "agreed-upon" answer to that but, in Marion, the City Showcase Event took place Saturday to do exactly this, showcase the growing city.
Hundreds came out to City Square park Saturday for one of what will be many celebrations in 2014.
This setting was only fitting given all of the recent work to improve the city square in recent years -- both the roads and the park.
"This is one event that will be included as part of our year long celebration. The city decided to host this and have every department represented, some vehicles on display and something for kids and adults alike," said Amber Bisinger, the city's communications coordinator.
Marion's population jumped up 32% from 2000 to 2010 -- showing the growth throughout the city limits. The 2010 census pegged Marion at just fewer than 35,000 people.
