MAQUOKETA, Iowa - A 63-year-old man in Maquoketa says someone shot him late Thursday night. Police have found the gun, and are still trying to figure out exactly how it all happened.

Police say the intruder shot Gerald Edwards inside his home at 208 South Niagara Street. That's just about a block away from the Maquoketa police station.

Edwards is now in stable condition at University of Iowa Hospital, while neighbors are left with questions.

Chuck Jorgensen has lived in the same house for decades. He's seen a lot happen in Maquoketa. But the shooting was a first.

"I've lived here for forty years and never had anything like this happen," said Jorgensen.

Jorgensen says the victim, Edwards, lived next door for about twenty years. He said he saw paramedics take Edwards away, and wonders if he's alright.

"I did see them taking my neighbor out. He looked like he was on a gurney, sitting up, which is good news. Apparently he's in stable condition. That's all we really know. Hopefully he's okay, " said Jorgensen.

Jorgensen describes Edwards as a kindly Vietnam veteran, who lost a leg to diabetes.

Neighbor, Ruth Eltrich agrees. She's lived across the street from Edwards for about four and a half years.

"He kept to himself quite a bit. We talked to him on occasion. He's a nice man," said Eltrich.

A nice man who's now recuperating in the hospital, while neighbors try to calm themselves.

"It's a little nerve racking, to have violence done right across the street, " said Eltrich.

Maquoketa Police say there is no danger to the public. They ask anyone with information to give them a call at 563-652-2468.
