CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – A man is “seriously injured” after he lost control of his vehicle on Otis Rd. SE this evening, crashed into trees, and was trapped for nearly 45 minutes.

According to Sgt. Robert Collins, the unidentified man was driving westbound in a gold Ford Taurus on Otis Rd. SE when he lost control, collided with trees on the south side of the street, and spun 180 degrees. The car came to rest on an incline, trapping the man inside at about 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Three fire trucks, six police vehicles, and an ambulance responded. It appeared firefighters were forced to cut off the driver’s side door as well as the top of the car to extricate the man.

It took responders roughly 45 minutes to get the man into the ambulance, which transported him to St. Luke’s Hospital, 1026 A Ave. NE, Collins said.

According to Collins, the man was “seriously injured” but semi-conscious.

Otis Rd. SE – between 17th St. SE and 16th St. SE – was blocked for more than an hour until the car was towed shortly after 5:30 p.m.
