Man Seriously Injured in Officer-Involved Shooting

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police said one man was seriously injured in an officer-involved shooting overnight.

Police responded to the 1400 block of Goddard Court for shots fired at 11:34 p.m. Officers arrived and found several cars with bullet holes in the 1200 block of 15th Street.

While police were there investigating, officers said an SUV drove up, driving fast and erratically.

Police said the driver didn't follow the officer's commands to stop or slow down, and instead accelerated. That's when three officers fired at the vehicle, according to police.

The vehicle continued to 1108 17th Street where police found the lone male occupant of the SUV inside the address suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was taken to Mercy Hospital where he is in stable condition.

"Officers were on the street. They were in uniform, had guns drawn, pointed at the vehicle, giving orders to the driver. The driver was not compliant and accelerated towards the officers who were on foot. That is when they fired at him," said Sgt. Jason Halifax.

Police have not yet released the names of the suspect and the officers involved.

Police do not know if there is a connection between the shots fired on 15th street and the SUV.

The man who was shot was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he's listed in stable condition.
