Man Hit By Truck in Hiawatha Last Week Dies

HIAWATHA, Iowa - A man who was hit by a delivery truck in Hiawatha last week has died.
Police confirmed that Charles Slaughter, 63, of Hiawatha, died Friday evening. Family members told KCRG.com Slaughter passed away after he was taken off life-support.
Slaughter was struck by a straight truck around 8:10 a.m. Wednesday on Center Point Road, just north of Blairs Ferry Road. Police said Slaughter was in the street when he was hit by the northbound truck. Medical personnel attempted CPR on Slaughter, who was taken to St. Luke's Hospital with serious injuries.
The vehicle involved in the crash was a delivery truck from Linn Star Transfer that typically delivers mail from larger post offices, such as Cedar Rapids, to smaller post offices like those in Shellsburg and Palo. Linn Star Transfer safety director Larold Witt the driver told him he thought he saw Slaughter walking on the sidewalk, and the next thing he knew, Slaughter ended up in front of the truck.
Witt said the driver, whose name has not been released by police, has been with the company for more than four years and has an excellent driving record.
Police were still investigating the circumstances around the collision. No charges have been filed.
