Man Guilty of Failing to Register as Sex Offender
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A 38-year-old Black Hawk County man has pleaded guilty in federal court to failing to register as a convicted sex offender.
Howard Sawyer pleaded guilty in Cedar Rapids' federal court on Thursday and was convicted of one count of failure to register.
At the hearing, Sawyer acknowledged that he knowing failed to update his registration between September 2009 and February 2011. Sawyer was required to register because of his 1998 Buchanan County conviction for third-degree sexual abuse.
Sawyer's sentencing date has not been set. He remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.
Sawyer faces up to 10 years in prison for the offense.
