DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A 19-year-old Waterloo man has been given 35 years in prison for a deadly hit-and-run accident in central Iowa.

Dajour Sawyers had entered Alford pleas to charges of vehicular homicide and first-degree theft in Polk County. Sawyers was sentenced on Tuesday.

He was charged in the April 7 crash that killed 36-year-old Chad Wells, of Altoona. Police say Sawyers was driving a stolen sport utility vehicle when he ran a red light and slammed into Wells' car.

Under an Alford plea, Sawyers didn't admit guilt but agreed that evidence likely existed for a conviction.
