Man Expected to Plead Guilty in Daughter's Death

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The lawyer for an Ankeny man says his client will plead guilty to fatally shooting his daughter.

Attorney Mark Pennington said after a pretrial conference on Thursday that 51-year-old Scott Hazelbaker will plead guilty on Sept. 17 to involuntary manslaughter. An assault charge will be dropped in exchange for Hazelbaker's plea.

Hazelbaker has admitted firing a handgun and killing his 18-year-old daughter, Emily Hazelbaker, but he says it was unintentional.

Police say he and his daughter were at the apartment they shared when he pointed a handgun at her on the evening of June 17 and pulled the trigger.

Hazelbaker says Emily was his best friend.
