KALONA, Iowa - Iowa State Troopers are trying to figure out what caused a man to drive across a farm field and crash into a tree Wednesday afternoon.

The Iowa State Patrol has identified the victim as Merle Miller, 63, of Kalona.

The crash happened just west of Kalona along Highway 22 shortly after 3 p.m. Investigators said Miller's vehicle, which was hitched to a cattle trailer, drove diagonally across a field before hitting a tree and bursting into flames. The accident scene was several hundred yards from the roadway.

Troopers said Miller may have suffered some sort of medical condition, which caused him to drive across the field. It's not clear if any animals were inside the trailer at the time of the crash.
