INDIANOLA, Iowa — Law enforcement officials said a driver with a child in his car led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash with a police cruiser.

Officials said the chase started at 2:49 a.m. in Clive. A driver led officers on a chase that reached more than 110 mph through multiple counties.

Officers said stop sticks were deployed to stop the driver on Highway 92 in Indianola.

The chase ended, according to officers, when the driver slammed into a parked police cruiser.

As officers approached the car, they found the man dead and heard cries from the child who was found on the floor of the vehicle. The child was taken to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.

The man and child's names have not yet been released.

Traffic through Indianola on Highway 92 was rerouted while the Iowa State Patrol investigated the crash scene.

An Indianola police officer who abandoned his cruiser just before the driver slammed into it was not injured in the crash, police said.

Clive police said the chase started when an officer started following the car, which they said had an obscured license plate. After the driver pulled into a truck stop on Hickman Road, the officer followed to try to identify the license plate.

Police said at that point, the driver left the truck stop and would not pull over for the officer. Clive police said that other law enforcement officers took over the chase on Highway 5, then chased the driver into Indianola on Highway 92.
