Man Charged For Fighting With Iowa City Police

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- An allegedly intoxicated man is accused of trying to fight with police officers earlier this month.
According to criminal complaints, Iowa City police were called to a Melrose Court residence at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 2 for a man "angrily yelling" for half an hour. Responding officers found 27-year-old Cory M. Cosens on the porch of the residence.
Police said Cosens had poor balance and showed other signs of intoxication, though he denied ever drinking in his life. Court records show Cosens was arrested for public intoxication in September 2013. Cosens thought he was at his residence, but was actually on the wrong street, police said.
Cosens refused to take any field sobriety tests and, after being told he was under arrest, began to twist and pull away from officers. Police said Cosens refused verbal commands and had to be directed to the ground and "exposed" to chemical spray. Cosens also allegedly threw two "ineffective" punches towards officers while resisting arrest. He was eventually handcuffed and arrested.
Cosens faces charges of assault on a peace officer, interference with official acts and public intoxication.
