IOWA CITY, Iowa – A 41-year-old man is back in jail after violating a protective order his girlfriend had against him and attempting to strangle her when she tried to flee, police said.

According to Iowa City police, Larry J. Slocum, of 5430 Fairview Cemetery Rd. NE in West Branch, was let into his girlfriend’s North Liberty residence after 9 p.m. Saturday, when an exchange unfolded causing her to ask him several times to leave.

When the victim, who has been previously involved with Slocum, attempted to flee her apartment, police said Slocum allegedly threw her to the ground and began strangling her, and she told police she felt “she was going to die” during the attack.

She suffered from bruising around her neck and damage to the soft tissue in her larynx, police said.

Slocum is charged with first-degree burglary, a Class B felony, willful injury, a Class D felony, domestic abuse assault with intent, an aggravated misdemeanor, and false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor.

He is being held on a total of $100,325 cash bond for his charges, according to the Johnson County Jail.

Slocum faces previous charges for domestic assault with intent and first-degree harassment from an incident in November, for which an arraignment hearing has been set at the Johnson County Courthouse for Jan. 26.
