Man Arrested Near Scene of Cedar Rapids Shooting Faces More Charges
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A Chicago man arrested Sunday near where three Cedar Rapids homes were shot now faces an additional charge.
Cedar Rapids police said Monday that 22-year-old Daevon Evans has been charged with possession of a firearm as a felon. Evans was previously charged with interference with official acts and possession of marijuana.
Police responded to the area of Washington Avenue and 15th Street SE at 12:03 p.m. Sunday for a report of shots fired. Officers discovered that three homes in the 1200 block of Third Avenue SE. had been shot. No one was injured in the shooting.
Given a subject description, police saw Evans and engaged in a brief foot chase with him. Officers recovered at handgun at 15th and Washington and located Evans nearby.
Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said that although Evans has been charged with possessing a handgun, he has not been definitively connected to the shooting. The investigation continues.
Hamblin said police are still trying to determine if the three homes on Third Avenue were specifically targeted or if the shootings were random.
"They're still trying to make those connections," Hamblin said.
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact Linn County CrimeStoppers at 1-800-272-7463 or sent a text to CRIMES (274637).
