IOWA CITY, Iowa - A transient man is accused of second-degree robbery and an alcohol violation after police say he tried to steal a keg of beer off a truck and threatened the delivery driver with a knife.

According to complaints, Gary Leon Duffel II, 44, was attempting to take a keg of beer off of a delivery truck near Benton and Gilbert Streets on Tuesday when the delivery driver returned and confronted him.

During the confrontation, police say Duffel took out a utility knife to scare the driver away before throwing it in the creek. When the driver approached Duffel a second time, complaints said he punched the driver in the head, causing him to bleed from his scalp.

Police later located Duffel roughly one block from the incident with a torn shirt, at which point police say he told them the driver bothered him for no reason. Complaints said he had slurred speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.
