Man Accused in 1997 Iowa City Homicide to Seek Release

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Minnesota man charged with killing his wife in Iowa in 1997 is asking to be allowed to live in his home until the trial.

John Richard Bloomfield's attorney says the 71-year-old has an illness that would be better treated by his doctors in Minnesota. He's asking a judge to let him live under electronic monitoring at his St. Paul, Minn., home. A hearing is scheduled Thursday.

Prosecutors say he strangled his wife, Francis, in 1997 at their Iowa City home, and dumped her body in a ditch near Rockford, Ill. He was a University of Iowa researcher then.

Investigators say they've developed DNA and hair evidence implicating Bloomfield, who's pleaded not guilty.

Johnson County is paying to house Bloomfield in a nearby state prison to improve his medical care.
