HIAWATHA, Iowa - An Iowa program that helps reduce the state's deer herd and feed Iowans in need is celebrating ten years.
The Department of Natural Resources and the Food Bank's "Help Us Stop Hunger" program, or HUSH, encourages hunters to donate legally harvested deer to local lockers. Lockers process the donations into ground venison for local food banks.
HACAP Food Reservoir in Hiawatha participates in the program.
"Once it comes into our door, it goes right back out. High protein items like that are high in demand," HACAP Food Reservoir Director Amanda Pieper said today.
The HUSH program has processed 56,000 donated deer and provided more than 11 million meals since the start of the program.
