Load Of Chickens In The Road Turns Into "Christmas Miracle"

IOWA CITY - A load of chickens scooped up by an Iowa City man turned into a "Christmas miracle" Wednesday night. Blaine Thomas says he was driving along Highway 1 in Iowa City when he came across a pile of freshly butchered chickens near the Sunset St. intersection.

"There's a huge pile of chickens lying on the ground, and it caught me off guard," said Thomas.

The chickens were on their way to a food bank in Solon, where they were to become Christmas dinners for those in need.

"We just wanted to make sure people had something other than potato chips and a loaf of bread," said Jay Proffitt, a Solon man who helped raise the chickens. A friend who helped with the project had sent them with a co-worker to Kalona to be butchered Wednesday morning.

"One of the coolers fell out and dumped the chickens on the road on the way back," Proffitt said. "Only half of them made it back to Solon."

Proffitt said he didn't expect to ever see the chickens again.

"I was just hopeful someone besides a coyote would eat them," he said.

But Thomas posted the unusual find on Facebook. Thursday morning, he had a tip, which led him to Proffitt.

"I could hear the sense of relief in his voice, he said those were destined for the food pantry," Thomas said. "How heart-warming is that?"

"I called our pastor and I told him, you're not going to believe the miracle that just happened," Proffitt said. "I said we found our chickens."
