MARION, Iowa - New guidelines for a high school dance caused some students to create a dance of their own. Last spring, Linn-Mar High School started talks to define what it considers to be inappropriate dancing at school events. The school principal said in an interview with KCRG-TV9 on Wednesday, that school officials met with student leaders and parents to create an outline of what would not be tolerated.
Recently, the district sent a letter to parents just a few weeks before their annual “Women Pay All” dance. It defines inappropriate dancing as grinding with the definition of “a student dancing in front of another student with their body pressed into his or her crotch.” It then provides a list of examples.
Some students aren’t happy about the change, and are now planning to hold a dance of their own, off school property. Kyle Jordan is a student at Linn-Mar and an organizer for the event. He said it’s a way to provide a safe alternative to the school dance. Word has traveled fast about the other dance on February 25th. A sold out dance, of 150 people referred to as “Grindfest 2012″.
While school administration had heard of it, they said the new rules, are here to stay. “We just want to make sure they understand, that if you come to the high school activity these are the expectations and these are what is going to be followed,” said Linn-Mar High School Principal Jeff Gustason. “I can understand students that just say look we want to rebel against the idea here. But I wold say, if you are a parent and saying, I want my kids to engage in those things, those are the ones that we are probably having the harder time conceptualizing for ourselves, the logic in that,” said Gustason.
Some students KCRG-TV9 talked to have mixed feelings on the issue. “Its just been like, why are we even complaining about it too much, why are we so focused over it,” said Alex Allington, a Senior at Linn-Mar.
“It’s just kind of interesting that like, why now? They pick all this change and stuff?,” said Bret McNeil, a Senior at Linn-Mar.
Some students are still trying to figure out where and how they will be dancing in a few weeks. KCRG-TV9 asked students which dance they will be attending, if any. “That I don’t know yet, I am trying to figure out what my girlfriend wants to do first,” said Allington.
“I’m probably going to the school dance,” said McNeil. “I plan on going to WPA, I don’t think I am going to get kicked out of the dance, that’s like the big issue people think they are going to get kicked out,” said Baumann.
“It’s a voluntary activity, we want kids to come, and we want them to have a good time,” said Gustason. Jordan says that “Grindfest2012″ will have 20 adults there for supervision, a police officer present, a bouncer from a local country club, and $2 million worth of insurance.
It’s listed to be held at the American Legion in Marion, they will have a DJ and a live band. Wristbands will be required upon entry. Students won’t be allowed to leave and then come back in for safety purposes.
