Beyond Books: Public Finds Unique Uses for the Library

By Heather Hubbs, Reporter

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - In the six months since the downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library opened its doors, patrons have used it for much more than just checking out books. From birthday parties to high school proms, it's becoming a mutli-use facility. It's also quickly become a popular spot for weddings.

Already, 13 couples have chosen to have their weddings at the library. The rooftop garden has been a big draw for brides and their grooms.
The sweeping views of the city make it the perfect spot to say "I do" or to have a reception.

The Whipple Auditorium is another popular place inside the library to exchange vows. One Cedar Rapids bride says she looked at 6 or 7 venues around town before booking her wedding at the library for this coming May.

"It was a week after the library opened," said Dania De Bortoli. "My fiance and I came here to check out the library and said oh my this is such a cool space we have to have our wedding here."

Dania says the artistic design of the library and price were the big draws. She says the library staff has made planning a wedding easy and stress-free.

The library only charges for meeting spaces when the event is outside of regular business hours or if the area needs to be closed off to the public, such as for a wedding in the auditorium or on the rooftop. Otherwise the rooms are free.
