Lawyers Say Des Moines Could Have Eluded $15M Fees
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The three attorneys who successfully sued Des Moines for charging improper franchise fees says the city could have avoided their $15 million legal bill by just stopping the fees.
A hearing on the fee request from Brian Stoltze, Brad Schroeder and Steve Brick is scheduled for Monday. Their fees will come out of the $40 million judgment in the class-action lawsuit.
City officials objected to the legal fee request in a court filing on Thursday.
The class-action lawyers responded Saturday with a news release criticizing the city's decision to keep charging the fees for nine years after being sued.
