Lawyer: Man Convicted of Murder Rejected Plea Deal
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An attorney for an Ankeny man convicted of first-degree murder in the 2004 death of his ex-wife's lover says his client now faces a mandatory life sentence after rejecting a deal by prosecutors that would have given him six years in prison.
Defense attorney Alfredo Parrish tells The Des Moines Register that 66-year-old Vernon Huser rejected a deal offered right before trial to plead guilty to a lesser offense. But Assistant Polk County Attorney Steve Foritano says discussions between Huser's attorneys and prosecutors never got "anywhere close to a real offer."
Huser was convicted Thursday in the death of Lance Morningstar, whose body was found in 2005. Authorities say Huser conspired with another man to kill Morningstar, who had an affair with Huser's ex-wife that began in 2003.
