DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A key Democratic hopes to return to the Iowa Senate this week, just two weeks after undergoing heart bypass surgery.

Sen. Tom Courtney, of Burlington, has been recuperating mostly at home since his operation at Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City on Feb. 28. He told The Des Moines Register that he's looking forward to returning to work at least on a part-time basis.

He says he's aiming to return to the Senate chamber on Wednesday.

His absence has left Democrats one vote shy of the majority required by the Iowa Constitution to pass legislation. With his return, the Democrats will have a 26-24 edge over Republicans.

The Senate soon will have floor debates and votes on critical issues.
