RIVERSIDE – Washington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed late Sunday night the death of 54-year-old Sharon Gerot is now a homicide investigation.
Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says investigators believe the man taken into custody Sunday afternoon for questioning is responsible. Authorities are not yet releasing his name.
Deputies originally responded to 1355 Deer Run Dr. south of Riverside after a report of four gunshots shortly after 4 p.m., authorities said.
Investigators and response crews from nearby counties shut down access to the neighborhood.
Law enforcement officials said Gerot and the suspect were acquaintances but declined to reveal the nature of the relationship.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Washington County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Patrol were going in and out of the home for about seven hours.
The sheriff’s office is expected to release more information today.
