Isaiah Sweet Murder Trial Begins

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Isaiah Sweet’s first-degree murder trial is underway this afternoon in Dubuque County District Court.

Sweet is accused of two counts of first-degree murder after police say he fatally shot his grandparents, Janet and Richard Sweet, on May 11. The Manchester couple was found May 13, with gunshot wounds to the head, by family coming to the home for Mother’s Day.

Brandon Ahlers, a friend of Sweets, was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the lesser charges of unauthorized possession of an offensive weapon and third-degree burglary, two counts of accessory after the fact and two counts of attempted third-degree burglary through an Alford plea for aiding Sweet with the murder.
