Kids Try Skating During Free Day at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena
By Chris Earl, Reporter
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - For any parent who has taken a child ice skating, what's the most trying part? Lacing up the skates and telling the kids to stay close to the edge.
Plenty of lacing, plenty of cajoling at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena's skating rink today for the Free Skating Day.
The point here is to let people try out ice skating and, of course, to make sure they skate clockwise -- with the flow of others -- and, please, watch out for the Zambonis.
"Just as cold it has been this winter. Getting the kids out there for the sport, whether figure skating, skating in general or hockey. Anything to try and grow it for the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena," said Bob Blevins of the Junior Roughriders.
"It makes it better when things are free. Especially ice skating. I don't really know how to ice skate so when it's free...better!" said Britton Fields who tried out skating Saturday.
Why this weekend in January? This month is national skate month from U.S. Figure Skating -- whether in the white figure skates or the dark hockey skates.
