Kids Learn Blacksmith Skills at Ushers Ferry
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A group of kids in Cedar Rapids spent the day being blacksmiths.
The Ushers Ferry Historic Village held a "Fire and Forge" workshop, and the kids worked on making their own S-hooks..
The volunteer who teaches the class has been working with metal for more than 14 years. He says it's not only a good skill for kids to pick up, but also a way to learn about history.
"It shows the genius. I think, of what blacksmiths did way back in the 1800's. And we think we're pretty smart today but they had some pretty neat tricks back then," said Rich Bykema.
This was the first class at Ushers Ferry since the 2008 flood. There's another workshop scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
