KALONA, Iowa - The Kalona City Council has accepted the name Salvesen Creek, chosen by the winner of an online auction, for its west drainage ditch.

Julienne Salvesen of Harlan won the naming rights with an eBay bid of $3,750. She said her husband is the last of his family, so she selected the name in honor of his Norwegian immigrant grandparents and to "preserve his family name."

City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said the name has to be approved by the U.S. Geological Survey, which could take up to five months.

The proceeds from the sale will help pay to improve sidewalks through the city's Safe Routes to School Project.
