CLAYTON COUNTY, Iowa -- A fight broke out outside the Clayton County Courthouse after Tuesday's sentencing of a man accused of severely beating an 18-month old girl.

Troy Laufenberg received the maximum 14-year sentence this morning for three child endangerment charges.

Dubuque police arrested the 21-year-old man in August. He was accused of severely injuring then 18-month-old Myah Larson in July. Doctors said the Monona girl suffered injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Prosecutors say Laufenberg told police the girl fell down some stairs, but in an affidavit, doctors say her injury was consistent with a kick or punch. The girl is still in the hospital.

Outside, a confrontation between members of Larson's family and Laufenberg's family forced the bailiff to break it up. A profanity-laced shouting match continued for a minute or two before both sides calmed down.
