JOPLIN, Missouri - A 39-year-old Missouri man is charged in the shooting death of a former assistant football coach at the University of Northern Iowa and Upper Iowa University, as well as Ames High School.
Jeffrey Bruner is charged with felony murder and armed criminal action. He's being held without bond.
Police say Bruner shot and killed Derek Moore, 37, Friday night outside a Joplin, Missouri movie theater.
Moore was a graduate of Buena Vista University and coached UNI's defense in 2009. He was in his first year of coaching at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin.
Investigators said no one else was injured in the shooting. They said they're still trying to determine a motive, but don't think this was a random act of violence.
"There was some type of relationship between the victim and the suspect. The extent of it at this time is still under investigation, but it was not a random occurrence. The victim and the suspect did know each other, there was a motive there, it was not a random occurrence," says Ryan West of Joplin Police Department.
The university canceled its homecoming activities for the weekend. It will hold a memorial service Monday afternoon.
Moore leaves behind a 7-year-old son.
