JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) — Police in suburban Des Moines say they suspect children are behind the five bottle bombs found in a Johnston park.

The Des Moines Register reports that a Johnston city employee found the bombs Thursday morning in Terra Park's parking lot and along a pond trail.

Johnston police spokesman Lynn Aswegan says four of the bombs had exploded, and fire crews and a bomb squad from Des Moines detonated the fifth with a pellet gun.

The bombs are typically made of household ingredients placed in a sealed bottle. The ingredients cause a chemical reaction that causes pressure to build in the bottle, which eventually explodes.

Aswegan says someone could be injured if they picked up an unexploded bottle bomb. None of the Johnston bombs damaged property or caused injury.
