NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa - Dozens of Johnson County middle-schoolers spent time working on a green assignment Wednesday.

The group of seventh grade students from North Central Junior High School, in North Liberty, removed brush and cleaned up the area around a creek near the school. Other students worked to clear a trail near the creek. The students were participating in the school's seven annual "Defenders of Land and Water Day."

Seventh grade teacher Lindsey Downes said all students hard work really paid off.

"They're amazing, it's a little warm today," Downes said. "But they've pushed through, they've done a great job and they've worked really hard."
