JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa - A Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy has been honored as the state's top cop.

This week, the American Legion presented Lt. Kevin Kinney with the Iowa Law Enforcement Officer of the year award. Kinney has been with the sheriff's department for nearly 30 years. He is most known for his recent work on child sex trafficking cases.

The longtime lieutenant says the award was a welcome surprise.

"I never got into this job to win awards, you just come to work and do your job. It's very touching that I won it."

In addition to working at the sheriff's office, Kinney is a full-time farmer in Johnson County.
