IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Officials in Johnson County are becoming increasingly concerned about the potential for rain, both this weekend and next week.

County spokesperson Terrence Neuzil said the county is monitoring a forecast from the National Weather Service that calls for the potential of 1-3 inches of rain during the middle of next week. County officials are also concerned a about the potential for rain this weekend.

"There is a concern about a (further) rise of the Iowa River," Neuzil said.

The Iowa River is currently around its crest of 25 feet and is projected to stay there for at least a week.

"This is not the time to start taking down flood protection measures," county chairperson Janelle Rettig said. "It is not time to go back in your houses and start rebuilding."

Rain could lead to additional flooding and the potential for more evacuations, Neuzil said.
