PRESTON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have resumed the search for the body of a snowmobiler who plunged through ice on the Maquoketa River.

Twenty-year-old Shawn Berthel crashed through the ice in late January. Officials conducted an intense searching with cold-water divers and cadaver dogs but did not recover Berthel's body.

The ice is thawed and the river is running freely, so family friends and even strangers have taken up the search for Berthel.

Jackson County Sheriff Russ Kettmann and a small team spent a full day searching for Berthel's body three weeks ago.

Kettman tells the Telegraph-Herald in Dubuque that authorities will continue to search for Berthel's body periodically because the family wants to bury him properly.
