ANKENY, Iowa - What Iowa officials call “one of the biggest lottery mysteries in the country” took another twist Friday.

Multiple people now claim the $16.5 million winning ticket from a Hot Lotto drawing a year ago was stolen from them. Now the Iowa Lottery has launched an investigation into the prize.

“We do not yet know the veracity of any of these claims, but this is just one of the details we will be seeking as we continue to investigate this prize claim,” Iowa Lottery CEO Terry Rich said in a press release Friday.

A representative from a Des Moines law firm turned in the winning ticket Thursday, just hours before the jackpot would have expired. The law firm represents the Hexam Investments Trust, with Crawford Shaw of Bedford, N.Y., as the trustee. The lottery has not met yet with the actual winner or winners but plans to ask he or she security questions about the winning ticket to confirm the win.

The Iowa Lottery has not paid out any of the jackpot money and will not pay out any money until it completes a security process to verify a winner.

“This is the first time the lottery has experienced a situation like this in its 26-year history,” said Rich, ”and we will continue our work, understanding that the security and integrity of the Iowa Lottery and its games cannot be compromised.”
