KEOKUK, Iowa (AP) — A 24-year-old man has been given life in prison for murdering his mother at the home he shared with her in Keokuk.

The Daily Gate City reports that Adam Pitman was convicted in July of first-degree murder and was sentenced on Monday.

Prosecutors say Pitman used an electrical cord to strangle his mother, 46-year-old Rosa Pitman, on Aug. 30 last year.

At his sentencing, Pitman said he was "truly, 100 percent sorry" he'd killed his mother.

His defense had argued during the trial that a drug-induced delusion led Pitman to believe he needed to euthanize his mother to end her medical and financial pain.
