DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa soldier serving in Afghanistan has died in a roadside bombing.

The family of 26-year-old U.S. Army Specialist Shawn Muhr, of Coon Rapids, says he was killed on Saturday. Muhr's father, David Muhr, told The Des Moines Register that his son was a passenger in a military truck that was hit by a roadside bomb.

Muhr's family says he had returned home on leave just after Christmas and returned to Afghanistan on Jan. 12.

The Department of Defense has not confirmed Muhr's death.

.Muhr was a 2003 graduate of Coon Rapids-Bayard High School. He joined the Army six years ago.

Telephone calls to Muhr's family by The Associated Press went unanswered Monday afternoon.
