DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa drivers would be able to renew their driver's licenses online instead of travelling to transportation department offices under a measure approved by the Iowa Senate.

Senators unanimously approved the measure Tuesday. It would allow drivers between 18 and 72 to renew driver's licenses through the state Department of Transportation's website without passing a vision test.

Under current law, drivers can renew at a county treasurer or DOT office.

Sen. Tod Bowman of Maquoketa amended the bill to extend the time licenses are valid from five years to eight years. Because of the amendment, the bill will return to the House for approval before moving to Gov. Terry Branstad.

Bowman says the law will decrease wait-times for license renewals.
