More Businesses Investing in Iowa River Landing

CORALVILLE, Iowa - Coralville's Iowa River Landing is growing in popularity, offering restaurants, retail and health care, all in one spot. The area has started sparking more business owners interest after the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics opened up their second location, just four months ago.

Dr. Rami Boutros, the Executive Medical Director at the UIHC Iowa River Landing location, said the clinic is on track to meet its projected 300 thousand patient visits a year. "The Iowa River Landing has been off to a great start. Our volume is picking up and our patients are very excited about the convenience we bring to them," he said.

Coralville Mayor, Jim Fausett, said some business leaders have been waiting it out to see what kind of traffic the area would actually attract. "When we were talking to people they would say, well we don't want to be the first ones there. They wanted to make sure there would be traffic in the area. Now, with the hospital there, they know there will be well over 300 thousand visits a year in the area," he said.

Development of the area has taken longer than leaders hoped, but Fausett said he's excited for what's around the corner. "We got a lot of things going now. There is a lot of excitement for people to be in this area and I think it's going to be the place to be," he said.

It's a place that people like Erik Shewmaker have wanted to be for some time. "We thought it was such a home run. The location is right off I-80 and it's close to Iowa City, so it seemed like the obvious pick," he said. Shewmaker will be the owner and operator of 30hop Restaurant, which opens in early September. He said the restaurant will offer the only rooftop patio in all of Johnson County.

But in the mix of retail and restaurants, you will also find two hotels. The Homewood Suites by Hilton just officially opened on Tuesday. Matt Traetow, the General Manager, is thrilled about their location in Iowa River Landing. "We're just excited to be a part of this and on the front-side, because it's rolling now and there is a lot of excitement for the area," he said. Traetow said the hotel will be working with another Iowa River Landing business on a daily basis. "Hilton gives us the flexibility to work with other local craft beer individuals. We will be working with Backpocket Brewing who will be supplying our beverages each evening," he said.

In a couple weeks, ground will break to build more retail buildings in the area. "We are looking for a number of different things that will bring people to the area and increase traffic flow," said Deanna Trumbull, the President of Trumbull Consulting. Trumbull said that a few more businesses coming to the area will be announced in March. "We've got some exciting restaurants, apparel stores, and some nice coffee and wine opportunities. It's going to be a really fun place to be," she said.
