DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republicans in the Iowa House have offered a package of $500 million in spending cuts that range from ending anti-smoking programs to eliminating sabbatical leaves by professors at public universities and calling for state workers to begin contributing to their health care coverage.
Republicans announced their plan Monday. When the Legislature convenes next week, the GOP will take a majority in the House.
House Majority Leader Linda Upmeyer, of Garner, says the cuts would save $500 million over three years.
Upmeyer says Republican candidates campaigned for shrinking the size of state government, and the spending cuts would show voters they are serious.
