Iowa DNR Offers Tips for Bird Feeding Season

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Officials say bird feeding season is approaching.

The state Department of Natural Resources says residents preparing to feed birds through the winter should keep in mind some popular items.

Officials say sunflower seeds are a top pick for cardinals, the tufted titmice, chickadees and nuthatches. That's because a high fat content is more valuable to birds in the cold.

Suet also attracts various woodpeckers and flickers. Freshwater helps birds looking for a drink or something to bathe in.

Pat Schlarbaum, a wildlife diversity technician, says autumn is when birds set up their feeding regimes. More than 750,000 Iowa residents are estimated to watch and feed wildlife each year.
