IOWA CITY, Iowa - University of Iowa head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery announced on Friday that the tumor removed from his son's thyroid is cancerous.
McCaffery's son, Patrick, underwent surgery on Wednesday morning to remove the tumor.
"Today, we received word from doctors that the tumor that was removed during our son Patrick's surgery on Wednesday is malignant," McCaffery said in a statement. "We will visit with doctors as soon as possible to determine Patrick's treatment."
The statement went on to say, "Margaret and I would like to thank everyone again for the outpouring of support from across the country for our son Patrick and family this past week. We appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers."
Patrick McCaffery turned 14 on Thursday.
