IOWA CITY, Iowa - Judy Nyren of Iowa City was visiting her daughter and son-in-law, who live in Peoria, Il, when a tornado struck Washington, not far to the east.

Nyren said she and her family had to seek shelter in a church basement in Washington, and estimates that the twister touched down no more than a half mile away from where she was.

They had to take shelter again when the weather picked up as they made their way back to Peoria, near the town of Morton.
